You can certainly count on Karl Lagerfeld to take you to the most fantastic places with each Chanel presentation: the bottom of the sea, a fortress of crystals, a wind farm, or even bring the World to you. Yes, Tuesday morning a huge rotating globe sparkling with hundreds of flags that carried the Chanel logo (each marking the locations of its 300 stores around the world) welcomed show attendees inside the Grand Palais. The legendary house is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the opening of the boutique set up by Mademoiselle Coco in Deauville back in 1913.
“It’s not world fashion domination, it’s about the globalization of fashion. I wanted a global look, not a French look. I wanted a very monochrome silhouette - dark but not sad - a touch of shine, a touch of pink”, commented Lagerfeld.
On this occasion, Chanel’s global female wore colorful fur flying helmets, thigh-high patent leather boots and embellished punk rock gloves. As usual, tweed was ubiquitous, this time in shades of black, grey, blue, purple and pink. Reefing jackets and suit jackets came with rounded shoulders, wide raglan or kimono sleeves, a funnel neck or a slashed sailor’s smock collar. Coats were cut high on the thigh at the front and mid-calf length at the back, tweed and knitted skirts split at the front revealed matching tweed shorts beneath. Most of these pieces could find their way into women’s wardrobes with the utmost ease.
Well, If Karl Lagerfeld and Mlle. Chanel haven’t taken over the world, their legacy has certainly left an indelible mark on the history of fashion.
